HOPE! In trying times, when one feels not in control of life, the one thing that keeps us going is hope. For some, this may just be a word, but for most, it is the reason they wake up every morning. Though we may not yet see the end result, but hope gives us something meaningful to look forward to, and that is all that matters.

The year 2021 has not been what many people had expected it would be. If you ask around, a majority of people had predicted that this year would be different from last year in terms of ‘normalcy.’ But what really is ‘normal?’ We have been confined to a certain way of living for a long time that we have settled for it to be normal, such that we get disoriented when forced to live differently.

As for me, I take normal to be what I make it. They say when life gives you lemons, make some deliciously cool lemonade. Well, I say that when coronavirus gives you a new way of life, take what you can and make the most of it. So really, normal is what you make it to be and how you want it to be. The Year That Was!

This year, 2020,  has been an eventful and unique one. We have experienced another perspective of life no one had ever envisioned. With the coming of the pandemic, we have discovered alternative ways of living the day-to-day lives that we might have been oblivious to before. The year 2020 has also been one of the most challenging years for most people. This Coronavirus not only crippled our health systems, but it exposed the inefficiencies in both at official level and in our personal lives and has forced us to make adjustments for our good. Looking back at 2020, one can only give thanks for having made it safely through the year.

Christmas Festivities Like Never Before

The festive season is round the corner and this year will see festivities being done differently. Most people are accustomed to travelling upcountry and re-uniting with the extended family for the holidays because for most people, the festive season is about spending time with family. However, fears over spreading the covid 19 virus, and the harsh economic times have rendered our festive culture history as most people will now get together online. ‘For better, for worse.’ These words are part of the vows couples make when entering into marriage – a simple phrase, yet so heavy and committal. Well, a wife would expect to be at her husband’s side during good times and during bad.  But what happens when a house-help makes this vow to her boss?

I know what you might be thinking, but trust me, it is nothing like that. The world is facing a pandemic that has brought everything to a standstill. Several people around the globe have lost their source of income, and the case is no different in Kenya. Covid – 19 has brought to light underlying issues that affect us daily, but we’ve been too busy to address. Also, it is during a crisis that you know a person’s true intentions and loyalty.

One such person’s loyalty has been put to the test during these trying times. When Mary* joined her current family, she had no idea that she would form such an attachment to her boss, much more so to consider her a sister and share in her joy and pain. Her employer, Linet*, had also not foreseen the coming storm that would leave her vulnerable.

When the Kenyan government issued a cessation of movement in and out of the capital city, Linet was okay with the situation, hoping, like most other families, that this would curb the spread of the virus. However, she had not given Mary leave as most employers did during this time because Mary herself opted to stay on and continue working during this period. Linet, seeing no problem with this as she had help in taking care of her young daughter, agreed to let Mary stay on.

Life is gradual, and some changes happen when we least expect it. Linet’s life took a whole different turn in the blink of an eye when suddenly, she and her husband were issued with an eviction notice because of failure to pay rent. Some people can be ruthless, but this is a story for another day. You see, Linet and her husband work in the travel and hotel industry respectively, and as you are aware, these are the industries worst hit by the pandemic. The couple had not received their salaries for two months, a factor that led to a strain on their finances, which resulted in a non-payment of rent for two months. The landlord, not seeming empathetic to their situation, could not care less whether there was a situation or not, evicted them, leaving them stranded.

I must admit that such situations take an emotional toll on someone, and Linet was no different. Her world turned upside down in a few moments, and soon she was looking for a place to lay her head, even if just for the night. Luckily, one of her friends who lived close by offered to accommodate her whole family as they sought an alternative.

All this while, Mary had the option of leaving Linet’s family and move in with a relative who lives within the city since things had hit the roof. Besides, that seemed like the only logical option as her job description did not entail ‘suffering with and for the family.’ However, she chose to stay on, took Linet’s hand, and reassured her that the storm would pass. She even saw the light at the end of the tunnel for the family.

As they moved to the friends’ house, Mary went about her duties as usual, not ever complaining. According to her, money would always come and go, but a stable relationship, like hers and Linet’s, was so hard to come by. She had found a home, and she chose to stand by her home and play her part in defending and protecting it. Amid the chaos, Mary’s and Linet’s relationship had been strengthened, hoping to grow even more post- corona. What Mary did was for better, for worse.

Electricity is a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current. We should always keep children away from electricity as they do not understand the danger of electricity and electrical equipment. In their innocent and imaginative minds what seems harmful tends to go unnoticed or appear to be fun.The following are the do’s and don’ts that should be observed by parents:

DO’S

• Look around your house for potential hazards that your child may view.
• Protect small children by using plastic safety covers in all unused outlets and keeping cords out of sight and reach.
• Replace and never tape cracked cords.
• Keep all electrical devices away from water
• Place furniture in front of outlets to keep them out of your child’s sight.
• Use cord covers to tuck loose electrical cords against a baseboard so children can’t pull, chew, or trip on them.
• Know where your home’s fuse boxes and circuit breakers are and how to turn them off in an emergency.
• Fly kite far away from electrical power lines or substations
• Ask your child to ask a grown up for help when they need to use something that uses electricity.
• Look up and look out for power lines before your child climbs a tree.
• Ask your child to immediately seek shelter if lightning or thunder is present while playing outdoors.

DON’TS

• Use extension cords as permanent substitutes for too few outlets.
• Overload an extension cord with more appliances than it is designed to accommodate.
• Keep appliances close to the sink or tub, where they could accidentally fall into the water.
• Run electrical cords under rugs. Walking over cords could fray or damage them.
• Allow electrical cords to hang off counter tops, where a child might pull them.
• Don’t plug an extension cord into another.
• Never allow children to climb a utility pole or tower as the electricity carried through this equipment is extremely high voltage and could kill them.
• Don’t throw anything at wires or electrical equipment, and don’t fasten things to utility poles. Damaged equipment can be very dangerous.
• Don’t touch someone that is being shocked until the electricity has been turned off.

Biting is a typical behavior often seen in infants, toddlers and 2 year old. It is a normal part of childhood development. Young children have their reasons for biting from teething to seeing what reaction it will provoke. Biting is something to be discouraged and there are ways to stop your young ones from biting.

Why children bite

Children bite for various reasons which include:
They are in pain because of teething which causes swollen gums and causes irritation to them.

They want attention – older kids use this as one of the bad behaviors to look for attention when they feel they are being ignored.

They are looking for a reaction – children are naturally curious hence want to experiment and see the type of reaction their actions will provoke not knowing how painful it is.

Exploring their world – Children use their mouths to explore since just about everything an infant or toddler picks will wind up in their mouth.

How to stop biting

It is good to have some prevention ways that will keep your child from biting:

• Offer activities and materials that allow your child to relax and release tension.

• Praise them for good behaviour: Catch your child behaving well – not biting siblings, playing well in groups, not biting to get his or her way – and be generous with praise.

Teach them it’s wrong: When your child bites, use simple but firm words. Try, “that’s biting, that’s wrong” or a firm “no”. If you’re in a group, remove them from the situation. Explain that it hurts others and why you don’t like them doing it.
